Or why to take on a “side” project in your non-existent free time š
This week, I want to talk about staying relevant through where we decide to contribute. I came to this idea because I felt motivated to repost an article from the Professional Womenās Group (PWG) of Zurich on LinkedIn.
The warmth and openness in the gallery of photos is exactly how it felt to me in the room. People wanting to contribute. Grateful to make a connection. Sharing challenges. New interests.
In a world in which we talk a lot about the ability to adapt to constant change, Iām super impressed with how the current Executive Team ā and through them the group ā is responding. Trying a wide range of events. New leadership roles tailored for either a āone offā project or longer-term commitment. Always seeking input. Contemporary topics. From this, I have also learned a lot.
The power of our āsideā projects
It reminds me how important it is to find something to which you want to contribute. Whether volunteering to help welcome people to an event you love doing (as a runner I know does for the Zurich marathon) or to lead an organization ā it so enhances a sense of relevance when you help make something happen.
Now there are plenty of excellent network and community options these days ā for women and many other interests. Important from my view is finding one that feels āhomeā to you when participating. A deep breath to relax. Not just a āshould do.ā
Over time, Iāve come to believe that if you want to know yourself better – even find out more about who you are than you imagined – actually take on a network or community side project. Gather others around you with whom to build it. And test yourself through its inevitable challenges. (āHow much extra energy and time can I really manage??? I have a whole life and a day job!ā š) Figure out why to keep going.
Energy to grow
What I genuinely appreciate about the current generation of leaders and members in PWG is that they are evolving it to be relevant in todayās context ā which they also help me better understand(*).
Itās this energic adaptation and experimenting that continues to give the women who participate a few refreshing moments. To take a deep breath. Feel welcome and seen. And that was the reason I joined in the first place. Decades ago.
*Since last year, Iāve been part of their new advisory committee. Iām honored to do it and value being reconnected in a way through which I am also growing.
